Kimi Antonelli delivered when it mattered most, securing pole position for the United States Grand Prix with a blistering lap at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas, on Saturday.

The Mercedes driver clocked 1:34.035 in the final qualifying session to edge out Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 0.179 seconds. Verstappen’s teammate, Isack Hadjar, completed the top three in a closely fought battle that underlined just how little separated the leading contenders.

Antonelli’s latest pole position, his seventh of the 2026 season, could prove particularly significant as the young Italian continues his pursuit of the Formula 1 world championship. Should Antonelli win on Sunday, he can become the new world champion, provided some other results go his way too.

The 19-year-old looked increasingly comfortable as qualifying progressed, and his opening effort in Q3 ultimately proved unbeatable. Despite the pressure of the final shootout, none of his rivals could find the pace needed to knock him off the top spot.

Verstappen settled for second after falling just short of the benchmark, while Hadjar impressed with a lap of 1:34.250 to secure third, only 0.036 seconds behind his teammate.

Ferrari had shown encouraging pace throughout the weekend, but Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton had to settle for fourth and fifth respectively. Leclerc recorded a time of 1:34.267, with Hamilton close behind in 1:34.311.

George Russell qualified sixth in the second Mercedes, leaving the team with a strong opportunity to collect valuable points on Sunday.

McLaren endured a frustrating session, with Oscar Piastri taking seventh and championship contender Lando Norris finishing eighth. Norris lost his fastest Q3 lap after exceeding track limits, a costly mistake that left him with work to do in the race.

Racing Bulls also secured a place in the top 10, with Arvid Lindblad ninth and Liam Lawson tenth. Lindblad, however, faces a five-place grid penalty for exceeding his permitted engine allocation.AUSTIN, TEXAS - OCTOBER 23: Charles Leclerc of Monaco driving the (16) Scuderia Ferrari SF-26 on

Further down the field, Williams suffered a disappointing afternoon, with Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon both eliminated in Q1. Esteban Ocon, Lance Stroll, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas were also knocked out in the opening segment.

The Circuit of the Americas is renowned for its challenging combination of high-speed corners, heavy braking zones and long straights, making both tyre management and a clean start crucial to a driver's chances.

Antonelli has given himself the ideal platform from which to challenge for victory, but Verstappen and the Ferrari pair will be eager to put him under pressure.

With the championship battle adding another layer of intrigue, Sunday’s race promises to deliver plenty of action in the Texas heat. Lights out for Sunday’s race is at 22:00.
