Norris takes pole in treacherous qualifying at Interlagos─── MORGAN PIEK 06:59 Sun, 08 Nov 2026
Lando Norris produced a superb performance in treacherous conditions to secure pole position for Sunday's 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos in Sao Paulo.
The McLaren driver mastered a rain-soaked circuit to clock a fastest lap of 1:27.470 in the final qualifying session, edging Mercedes' George Russell by just 0.204 seconds. Kimi Antonelli completed the top three to give Mercedes a strong qualifying result.
However, the session was anything but straightforward, with heavy rain, lengthy delays and two red flags making for a dramatic afternoon at the iconic Interlagos circuit.

Qualifying was initially interrupted just minutes after getting under way when the conditions deteriorated rapidly. Water accumulated on the circuit, leaving drivers struggling for grip and visibility. After a lengthy delay, the session eventually resumed, with the drivers facing the challenge of finding speed while avoiding costly mistakes.
Norris showed excellent composure throughout the changing conditions and made his opportunity count in Q3. With further rain threatening, getting a competitive lap on the board early proved crucial.
The British driver delivered when it mattered most, securing another important pole position and continuing his impressive form at the Brazilian venue.
Russell settled for second, while his Mercedes team-mate Antonelli claimed third. However, Russell's five-place grid penalty means he will drop down the starting order for Sunday's race.
Charles Leclerc qualified fourth for Ferrari, but his 10-place grid penalty will also affect his starting position.
One of the standout performances came from Liam Lawson, who put together an impressive qualifying effort to secure fifth for Racing Bulls. Nico Hülkenberg was sixth for Audi, followed by Red Bull's Isack Hadjar in seventh.

Lewis Hamilton - F1
Oliver Bearman secured eighth for Haas, with Fernando Alonso ninth for Aston Martin and Alexander Albon completing the top 10 for Williams.
There was disappointment for championship contenders Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen. Piastri could only manage 12th after a red flag in Q2 prevented him from improving his time, while Verstappen elected not to participate in the second qualifying segment with a substantial power-unit penalty already hanging over him.
The session also proved particularly difficult for Brazil's home representatives. Gabriel Bortoleto crashed his Audi in Q1 and ended the session at the bottom of the classification, while Haas rookie Rafael Câmara also suffered an incident in Q2 after showing promising pace.

Carlos Sainz - F1
Several grid penalties will reshuffle Sunday's starting order, creating opportunities for drivers who qualified further down the field.
With Norris starting from the front and the weather once again threatening to influence proceedings, the stage is set for an intriguing Brazilian Grand Prix.
Lights out for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos is at 19:00 on Sunday evening.
