Past records count for nothing─── MORGAN PIEK 16:45 Thu, 31 Jan 2019
Past records count for nothing, this is the view of the Toyota Cheetahs ahead of Saturday’s Guinness Pro14 derby against the Southern Kings in Bloemfontein.
The two South African teams go head-to-head for the second time this year in the Pro14, after clashing in Port Elizabeth some two weeks ago.
The Cheetahs and the Kings have faced each other five times in Pro14 before, with the Central franchise leading the head-to-head battle five-nil. The most recent win for the Cheetahs was on 18 January when Luan de Bruin scored and 85th minute try at the Nelson Mandela University’s Madibaz Stadium for at 24-17 victory.
The coach, Franco Smith, told OFM Sport that their unbeaten record over the Kings in the competition means nothing heading into this week’s derby.
“In this competition, there is no such things as a week team.
“There are teams that maybe have an off day here and there, but the more you place in this competition, the more you adapt to it.
“I agree 100% that they will be up for the fight and they are going to be difficult to beat.
“We realise that and we are going to be concentrating on what we need to do.
“We will definitely want to come here and get the next win.”
Saturday’s South African derby in the Pro14 at the Toyota Stadium kicks off at 16:00.
