Abongile Nonkontwana - Gallo

The big ball-carrying Toyota Cheetahs flanker, Abongile Nonkontwana, has credited the Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs, for some of the skill he has brought to the Central franchise.

During Sunday’s Guinness Pro14 match between the Scarlets and Cheetahs at Parc y Scarlets in Llanelli, Nonkontwana, set-up what is already being described as the try of the season.

The movement started just outside the Cheetahs 22 when the speedy winger, Rabz Maxwane, had a dart at the Scarlets defensive line, before offloading to Junior Pokomela who was running in support on the left touchline.

Pokomela outstripped two defenders before being brought down just outside the Scarlets 22. In the process, he offloaded along the ground Nonkontwana, who was now running down the touchline.

First, Nonkontwana hacked the ball forward before it bounced up and allowed him to chip it over the head of Ioan Nicholas, from almost behind him, while running at full speed.

Maxwane was running on the inside and the ball popped perfectly for him to go over for this 11th try of the Pro14 campaign.

Speaking to OFM Sport from Dublin, Nonkontwana, said that he knew there was a chance for the team to score, and he had to make it count.

“In all honesty, in my mind, there was only one thing in my mind. I knew that we had an opportunity and we had to take it by all means and convert it into points.

“The kick was purely instinct given the situation I was in.

“When I heard Rabz’ voice on the inside I knew he would win the foot race, as long as I nudged it enough in the clear for him to gather and finish.

“I must thank my friends in the PSL (Premier Soccer League) namely Lorenzo Gordinho and Bryce Moon at Kaizer Chiefs that I had that trick up my sleeve.”

Gordinho recently linked back up with Kaizer Chiefs are a very successful loan spell at Bloemfontein Celtic where he was a mainstay in the Phunya Sele Sele defence.

The Cheetahs are in Dublin this week where they will face the defending champions, Leinster, at the RDS Arena on Friday evening.
