Rugby Australia set the axe Folau─── MORGAN PIEK 11:45 Thu, 11 Apr 2019
Rugby Australia has indicated that they are set to sack the controversial back, Israel Folau, after his latest anti-gay tweet earlier in the week.
The deeply religious Folau took another swipe by sharing his views on the LGBTQ+ community over the social media, causing an uproar and breaching his contract with the governing body.
In a brief statement sent out by Rugby Australia, they explained that they have been unable to get into contact with the player who just last week became the all-time leading try-scorer in Super Rugby.
The also voiced their intentions of terminating their contract with the player.
Rugby Australia and the New South Wales Rugby Union have made repeated attempts to contact [Folau] both directly and via his representatives on Wednesday, and at this point he has failed to communicate directly with either organisation.
"Whilst Israel is entitled to his religious beliefs, the way in which he has expressed these beliefs is inconsistent with the values of the sport. We want to make it clear that he does not speak for the game with his recent social media posts.
"Israel has failed to understand that the expectation of him as a Rugby Australia and NSW Waratahs employee is that he cannot share material on social media that condemns, vilifies or discriminates against people on the basis of their sexuality.
"In the absence of compelling mitigating factors, it is our intention to terminate his contract."
Many rugby pundits are of the view that Folau's latest stunt was to get out of this contract with the governing body in order to take a lucrative contract with a rugby league team.
