Griquas target the set-piece and breakdown─── MORGAN PIEK 14:55 Fri, 21 Jun 2019
Controlling the set piece and the break down will be the Tafel Lager Griquas goal when they tackle the Pumas on Sunday in the final of the SuperSport Rugby Challenge which will be played in Saldanha Bay.
The Peacocks Blues are in the final for a third straight year and will want to set the record straight after losing to the Pumas last year.
Earlier in the competition, the defending champions beat the side from the Northern Cape 38-27 in Nelspruit.
One man who will know how to beat the Pumas in the Griquas coach, Brent Janse van Rensburg, who coached the side form the Lowveld to the title in Oudtshoorn last year.
Janse van Rensburg told OFM Sport that they have to starve the Pumas of any momentum.
“We will have to make sure that they don’t get momentum off the set-piece. That will be a big part of the game that we will need to get right.
“Then it will come down to us being accurate in our execution and making sure that we will our breakdown ball.
“They really do stir in the collision and they get their hands on the ball to stop the momentum. So we will be to make sure that we look after our breakdown ball.
“When they move the ball out wide with momentum they do have some speed. Us being mentally for the physical confrontation and making sure that we’ve got some really good line speed, tackle fight defensively and being able to slow the ball down will be critical.
“They have score 66% of their tries so far off the set-piece. Minimising set-piece in our own half, and when they do get set-pieces particularly from the lineout, we’ve got to be very accurate in stopping that momentum.”
Sunday’s final kicks off at 14:30.
