The scrumhalf, Tian Meyer, has been appointed as the Toyota Free State Cheetahs captain for the 2019 Currie Cup which kicks off this week.

The seasoned captain was a joint captain of the team last season along with Shaun Venter following the knee injury of Oupa Mohoje.

Mohoje is still on the sidelines while Venter will be heading to Wales. Mohoje was expected to be ready for the Currie Cup, however, over the last two months, his recovery has not gone according to plan.

Meyer relishes the opportunity of taking the reins of the Free State again in the worlds’ oldest domestic competition.

“It is a huge honour for me to be the captain of the Free State Cheetahs for this year’s Currie Cup.

“Together with the team, I am very excited to get onto the field to show how hard we’ve worked in the pre-season.

“It’s not going to be easy, but we are determined to give our best and to make the supporters proud.”

It is expected that William Small-Smith and Ox Nche will be serving as the teams’ two vice-captains.

The Cheetahs will be announcing their squad on Tuesday night during the Currie Cup launch.

The Sharks host the Tafel Lager Griquas at Kingsmead in Durban on Friday night in the opening match of the Currie.

The Cheetahs enjoy a first-round bye and will face the Blue Bulls next Friday at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.
