Whitehead and Arnoldi on debut for the Cheetahs─── MORGAN PIEK 13:00 Fri, 25 Oct 2019
The new Toyota Cheetahs coach, Hawies Fourie, has revealed his hand for the first time by naming his side to tackle Connacht in Galway during round four of the Guinness PRO14.
Fourie is in charge of the Cheetahs for the first time since taking over from Franco Smith as the head coach, and he will be tested as his first outing in on tour as well.
Earlier Fourie indicated that we won’t be changing much to the teams' structure and what is already in place and working.
He has however tweaked the team a little and there are two debutants this weekend.
Upfront it Ox Nche and Aranos Coetzee will start at prop, while Jasper Wiese will start at the back of the scrum.
Coetzee is back with the team after representing his country Namibia at the Rugby World Cup in Japan. Nche, in his turn will be playing in his very last game for the Cheetahs before returning to South Africa to link up with the Sharks for their Super Rugby preseason.
Wiese earns a long-awaited starting role following the departure of Henco Venter who is also plying his trade at the Sharks.
In the backline, Clayton Blommetjies will start on the wing, with William Small-Smith moving to the bench.
Dries Swanepoel has recovered from his calf injury which saw him missing the 40-16 win over Munster a fortnight ago. Swanepoel and his midfield partner, Benhard Janse van Rensburg, do however swop jerseys. Janse van Rensburg will play at inside centre and Swanepoel on the outside.
The flyhalf, George Whitehead (on loan from the Griquas), and the hooker, Wilmar Arnoldi, have been named on the bench for their PRO14 debuts. Arnoldi comes in for the injured Reinach Venter, while Whitehead replaces Louis Fouché in the squad.
Before the teams' departure to Ireland, Fourie told OFM Sport that they cannot afford to take too many chances in their half of the field.
“It is to focus on something else. When we play in the Northern Hemisphere it is very important to have a very good kicking game, something we didn’t focus on in our home games.
“There we tried to run the opposition ragged and used the altitude to our advantage, but when we go over we will have to have a good kicking game, and that was the main difference in our focus from the first three games to the tour.
“The important thing for me is not to take too many chances in our own 22m area and to be organised when we want to kick. Who chases the ball and who stays behind, for instance? It was something we spent a lot of time on, but we aren’t going to be like Faf de Klerk and kick every ball we get.
“We are also not going to take too many chances in our own half.”
