The Toyota Cheetahs suffered their second narrow defeat overseas in the Guinness PRO14 after losing 17-13 to Scarlets in Llanelli on Saturday.

Wet and windy conditions in the west of Wales made an expansive game nearly impossible, although both teams scored some good tries.

The scoring was opened in the 13th minute when the Cheetahs captain for the game, Tian Meyer, scored in the right corner after the visitors managed to turn over a Scarlets ball. Tian Schoeman added the extra two from the touchline.

The winger Steff Evans struck back for Scarlets ten minutes later and the flyhalf, Dan Jones, made no mistake in landing the conversion to level matters.

The scrumhalf, Kieran Hardy, scored on the stroke of half time for the crucial try by the hosts to hand them a 14-7 lead at the break.

Schoeman slotted a penalty in the 42nd minute to make it a four-point game.

Ruan Pienaar came on the park with less than 20 minutes to play and made an immediate impact by landing a penalty to make it a one-point game. Scarlets struck back immediately with a penalty by Dan Jones to stretch the lead back to four-points.

The Cheetahs got themselves into a really good scoring position with minutes remaining on the clock however they weren’t able to make use of the opportunity when a stray pass went forward.

Scarlets worked their way to within in scoring distance through a series on penalties and Jones had another crack on goal; however his penalty missed to bring an end to the game.

The Cheetahs won’t have had their sights set on at least four points; however, they had to settle for a single point. Had Pienaar been on the park for ten minutes longer, the outcome of the game could have been different, as he brought more composure to the side during his short spell.

The Cheetahs wrap up their tour next week Saturday against the Cardiff Blues at Cardiff Arms Park. Kick-off in the Welsh capital city is at 19:15.

Scorers:

Scarlets: Tries – Steff Evans, Kieran Hardy Conv. - Dan Jones 2 Pen. – Jones.

Cheetahs: Try – Tian Meyer Conv. – Tian Schoeman  Pen. – Schoeman, Pienaar.
