Davis ready to make a return | News Article
Aidon Davis - Morgan Piek

The Toyota Cheetahs loose forward, Jasper Wiese, will know his fate by next week following the red card he received against the Cardiff Blues in Cardiff on Saturday.

Wiese was shown a red card in the 15th minute of the Guinness PRO14 round six tie after a dangerous cleanout at a ruck which made contact with the head and neck region of the flyhalf, Jason Tovey.

Earlier during the Cheetahs tour to Ireland and Wales, the centre, Dries Swanepoel, also received a red card for a similar offence against Connacht in Galway. Swanepoel received a six-match ban, however, it was reduced to three weeks due to his good record and because he showed remorse.

Wiese, it more on an enforcer in the Cheetahs set-up and will never shy away from the physical stuff. The good news for the player is that he also has a clean record in the PRO14 and Saturday’s card was the first of any colour he has received.

The Cheetahs coach, Hawies Fourie, has got options available should Wiese receive a ban.

Sias Koen should be first in line to earn a starting role, however, the Springbok Oupa Mohoje and former Junior Springbok, Aidon Davies are both fit and ready to play after long term injuries.

Mohoje hasn’t played in more than a year after sustaining a serious injury to his knee in the 18th minute of the Cheetahs first match against Munster during the 2018/19 season.

Davis in his broke his leg during training earlier in the year has been undergoing rehabilitation for the serious injury.

The pair have been training with the team for quite some time now.

Davis, told OFM Sport that he is ready to answer the call.

“The guys who stayed behind and didn’t go on the tour had a tough three weeks of training.

“The idea behind that was that if we are needed we will be fit and ready to go.

“I am fit and ready, and my injury is a thing of the past now. I’m just waiting for my chance to play now and contribute to the team.”

Fourie also has the option of Chris Massyn who linked up with the squad from Western Province recently. Massyn’s skillset is something that the Cheetahs missed on tour. The man who captained both Tuks and Maties to Varsity Cup titles, has the potential to be a great player on the ground, while he is also a big ball carrier and solid defender.

The Cheetahs will face the Ospreys in Swansea on 30 November in their final match of 2019.
