Three more of Gerber's teammates test positive─── MORGAN PIEK 13:23 Tue, 31 Mar 2020
Three of Danie Gerber’s Springbok teammates from 1981 have tested positive form COVID-19.
Over the weekend the news broke that the former Boks centre, Gerber, had tested positive for the virus, and he is in self-isolation with his wife in Port Elizabeth.
Prior testing positive, the 61-year-old Gerber and the other former Boks attended a reunion golf day in Jan Kempdorp.
At the confirmation of Gerber’s positive result, there were fears that other former players also contracted the virus.
The other three former Springboks who tested positive for the virus are Colin Beck, Burger Geldenhuys and Divan Serfontein. The latter, Serfontein, is also a medical doctor.
According to reports, another former Springbok, Robbie Blair, also contracted the virus. Blair was also in attendance at the golf day in the Northern Cape.
Gerber became the first sportsman living in South Africa to test positive to the coronavirus. Earlier last week, former South African Olympian, Cameron van der Burgh, confirmed that he had tested positive. The former swimmer, who retired in 2019 has been living in London, England.
On Sunday, the top South African mountain biker, Mariske Strauss, confirmed that she had tested positive. Strauss and her teammate, Candice Lill, were considered to be the favourites to win the cancelled 2020 Cape Epic.
