The Toyota Cheetahs have emphasised the importance of being adaptable with regard to returning to play. At this point in time it is still anyone’s guess when the sport will be able to resume as normal, and this is a frustration shared by all.

SA Rugby will be approaching the government in order to see the respective teams across South Africa to resume training, albeit under strict conditions.

While the players all have specialised training programmes they are following, there is a real danger of injuries.

Cheetahs assistant coach, Charl Strydom, told OFM Sport that a good example is that the players have to be able to do simple things such as changing direction without sustaining injuries.

He added that it will be key to be adaptable with their planning.

“We know that we're not going to be able to play within the next month because we will need at least four weeks to train.

“We have planned, and it is an adaptable plan. After that we will be able to be back on the field within a week after the first month of training is done.

“We will adapt to whatever regulations will be put in place.”

As rugby is a contact sport it will take longer for the teams to be given permission to resume training, and when that does happen the Cheetahs will field smaller training squads.

There has even been a suggestion that when rugby does return, the game will commence without scrums, rucks and mauls.
