The two-time World Cup winner and All Blacks legend, Dan Carter, is set for a return to rugby after signing a deal with the Blues in Auckland.

Carter has been a free agent since bidding farewell to the Kobe Steelers in France.

While he is one of the biggest names in world rugby, Carter, will be the third-string flyhalf at the Blues behind Beauden Barrett and the up and coming Otere Black, and he will also act as a mentor to the duo.

Rugby in the Land of the Long White Cloud will resume next week with the Super Rugby Aotearoa kicking off.

Blues coach, Leon MacDonald, says that while they are glad to have Carter, he won’t be on the playing field anytime soon.

“We’ve got to take our time to look after Dan and progress him safely.

“He has a lot to get through before we can start considering him for selection, so don’t expect to see DC on the rugby fields by any stretch. We will take our time and use him when he is ready to go.”

Carter in his turn is happy to be back in New Zealand rugby following a stint in France and Japan.

“I realised I really enjoyed spending more time with my family, and that I miss rugby.

“Leon is a good mate and we spoke about me helping out. For me it is a chance to mentor some young players and to give back to New Zealand rugby.

“I have not played for several months so it will be a number of weeks before I will be ready to be considered to play. And then only if my form warrants it. I'm fit but not rugby fit.

“It's an exciting opportunity to train in the same city that my kids go to school and my family are currently living in.

“It will also be nice to share my experience with some of the young talent they have here at the Blues.”

Next week Saturday at 7:05 the Highlanders will host the Chiefs in Dunedin, and on Sunday at 5:05 the Blues face the Hurricanes at Eden Park. Both matches will be televised.
