Vermeulen would welcome a strong domestic tournmanet─── MORGAN PIEK 12:26 Mon, 08 Jun 2020
The World Cup-winning Springbok star, Duane Vermeulen, has welcomed SA Rugby’s idea of a strong domestic rugby tournament.
The governing body of the sport in South Africa is seeking to start a new local tournament which will see the four Super Rugby franchises (Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers) and the PRO14 franchises (Toyota Cheetahs and Southern Kings), as well as the Griquas and the Pumas go head-to-head in a double-round tournament.
The former Cheetah, Vermeulen, who is now at the Bulls told OFM Sport that it would be good for the fans and the sport.
“It would be is fantastic to see. In a way, I think that SA Rugby needs it and the people need it. To see the Springboks playing a domestic competition or the Currie Cup will be fantastic.
“All the players are looking forward to getting out there, getting out on the pitch and playing a bit. We’ve been sitting at home, training and trying to be in the best shape that we can be.
“It is going to be fun and it is going to be nice.
“To see the Pumas and the Griquas in there as well will be special for the unions, but unions that are actually very competitive. It is sad not to see teams like SWD getting an opportunity as well because there are a lot of guys there that can participate and that can play. There are a lot of players in South Africa and you can easily fill teams.
“I am looking forward to it and I can’t wait. Hopefully, it can start soon and everyone can see the players out on the field again.”
SA Rugby is yet to finalise the proposed tournament.
