Steyn more than happy to guide the Cheetahs youngsters─── MORGAN PIEK 13:51 Mon, 13 Jul 2020
The two-time World Cup-winning Springbok, Frans Steyn, has welcomed the role of being a mentor at the Toyota Cheetahs. Steyn officially reported for duty at the Cheetahs last week after arriving back in South Africa from France.
The 33-year-old is the Cheetahs biggest signing since Ruan Pienaar, and the coach Hawies Fourie has stated that they have to guide the next generation at the team.
Speaking to OFM Sport, Steyn, said that he will gladly help the youngster, but it is ultimately up to them to make use of the opportunity.
“For the young guys, you can only be a mentor if somebody wants help.
“In Montpellier, it was different because the French and South African culture are two different things.
“I would gladly help where I can, and help the young guys where I can.
“If somebody can learn from the mistakes that I made, then it is already a positive.”
Steyn further added that at a young player, the guy he looked up to and still holds in high regard, is the former Sharks and Springbok centre, Butch James.
“I was privileged to be in a Sharks team where it was different. Dick Muir was our coach and we were a lot of young guys.
“Ruan (Pienaar) was 21, Butchie was there, and then there was Brad Barrett, Waylon Murray, JP Pietersen, me and Percy Montgomery.
“There were only two senior guys, so it was a different set up when I started.
“I’ve always looked up to Butch. I still today think that he is probably the one guys that deserves more credit for 2007.
“He was amazing and still today he is still the guys I looked up to the most, even when he finished rugby. He is still a person one can really look up to.”
Steyn will be at the Cheetahs on a two-year contract, and at the moment he is still training on his own.
