Griquas delighted to be back on the training field─── MORGAN PIEK 13:33 Mon, 20 Jul 2020
Rugby teams in South Africa took to the training field on Monday for the first time since March after the government gave the go-ahead for team sessions.
The two Guinness PRO14 teams, the four Super Rugby teams as well as the Tafel Lager Griquas and Pumas all returned to training, albeit under strict guidelines.
In addition, no contract training is permitted yet.
Griquas coach, Scott Matthy, told OFM Sport that there was a definite buzz in the camp this morning.
“We are pretty excited here and there was good energy in the air this morning.
“It is good to be back on the field and it is definitely a step in the right direction as we prep for rugby towards the end of the year.
“All the protocols are in place and obviously all the players will have to get used to then and adhere to them.
“Health and safety is defiantly the priority at the moment but we do understand that we have to get these guys ready for the competitions that await.
“We are still going to be training in small groups, so there won’t be too much banter and connecting on the field. It will just be in their groups of five.
“It is a positive step and definitely looking forward to what’s to come.”
The news has reignited the hope that the planned Currie Cup double-round will get underway at the end of next month.
