Strauss never played PRO14 rugby as the Cheetahs but led the team for a long time in the Super Rugby before making a move to the Bulls.

The Cheetahs are under pressure to retain their spot in the Guinness PRO14, as the South African Super Rugby teams are set for an exited from the cross-continent competition in the southern hemisphere.

New Zealand has already stated they want the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers out of the Super Rugby, while there are conflicting reports coming out of Australia.

One of SA Rugby’s plan is to see South African teams move up north, while there is still an east-to-west option as well as a backup plan.

If the Super Rugby franchises move north, it could mean the end of the Cheetahs and Southern Kings participation in Europe.

When asked for his thoughts on the matter, Strauss was rather diplomatic in his response.

Strauss told OFM Sport that it is a very tough decision that needs to be made, but ultimately the people of the Free State need their team to participate in Europe.

“It’s a very tough one and it is hard when your fate is not entirely in your own hands.

“But, the Cheetahs and the type of player that is bred there will always have a way to surprise and exceed expectations.

“As the adage goes, you can’t keep a good man down.

“I wish them all well, and the people of the Free State need their dear Cheetahs to play!"

The Cheetahs and the Kings entered the PRO14 in 2017 when they were kicked out of the Super Rugby along with the Perth-based Western Force.
