It's great news getting the green light - Meyer─── MORGAN PIEK 09:38 Fri, 07 Aug 2020
The Toyota Cheetahs are looking forward to taking a step-up in their training and to get back out onto the field in the coming weeks.
The government has given rugby the green light to resume matches, albeit under strict measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
These measures will include playing in a bio-safe environment.
All matches will also be contested in an empty stadium, with only essential staff permitted to be in attendance.
At this stage, it is unclear where the bio-safe environment will be, but there could be one for the Super Rugby teams, while another will play host to the Guinness PRO14 teams as well as the Griquas and Pumas.
The Cheetahs club captain Tian Meyer told OFM Sport that they welcome the good news.
“Its great news getting the green light to resume matches and I am sure that all of the guys are just as excited as I am,” said the Currie Cup-winning Free State captain.
“To get back on that field and play the game we love so much, and training-wise it will be great to get back to a bit more normality and get that contact fitness up and train more in a team environment instead of in smaller groups.
“I think the energy will flow and the positive news is great at this time. We know that a lot of companies are really struggling and things. It is awesome to work from SA Rugby and we are very grateful that the sport can start again.
“It's good news and let's hope for the best and that we can get back onto the park as soon as possible.”
At this stage, none of the teams will be permitted to compete in international competitions.
