The eight South African franchises are expected to start with contact training this week as they prepare for the resumption of domestic rugby.

On Saturday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the country would move to level two on the national lockdown as of Tuesday, and for rugby, this is good news.

This means matches may continue and that the teams would be able to travel between provinces.

Having said this it could mean that the sport may not be making use of the bio-safe bubbles as previously suggested.

The one scenario will see SA Rugby still making use of a bio-bubble, but will less testing, while there is also a possibility of the bio-bubble not being used, but then continuous testing will take place.

There has been no word from SA Rugby on the matter yet, but more clarity is expected later in the week.

Last week the Cheetahs outside back, Rhyno Smith, told OFM Sport playing in a bio-bubble is a little more complex than just playing.

“As far as making sacrifices to play rugby again I will be the first to put things aside for it.

“But, it needs to be said that a double round Currie Cup in a bio-bubble doesn't feel all that fair to me. In particular towards many of our players’ wives. Some guys have three or four kids, some guys have young kids.

“Their wives will be left alone at home with those kids. It’s a lot more complex than saying we are will to make the sacrifice to play again.

“You want to say yes, but ultimately you fulfil more than one role above and beyond just being a rugby player.

“We are all really excited and so keen to get back and we would love to play. Just for the record, I do think a double round in a bio-bubble is pushing it at best.

“We really have to think carefully about how we are going to approach it.”

The 2020 Currie Cup is expected to kick-off during the second weekend of September.
