Players are craving game time and contact─── MORGAN PIEK 13:27 Mon, 24 Aug 2020
The newly contracted Toyota Cheetahs lock, Ian Groenewald, has echoed sentiments of other rugby players in South Africa, regarding a return to the playing field.
There is still no word from the government as to when the teams may resume contact training ahead of the expected resumption of matches.
In level two, matches are permitted behind closed doors, but until contact training is permitted they cannot do much else in their preparation.
Groenewald, who is still at the Griquas and will be joining the Cheetahs later in the year, told OFM Sport that they are itching to play.
“It was awesome to start training with the team and not in smaller groups as has been the case.
“You didn’t see some of the guys during the week because we were training in smaller groups and at different times. So it’s awesome to be training with everyone against and hopefully, we can get the green-light to start playing soon.
“Hopefully by mid-September or towards the end of next month.
“That would be great because the guys are really craving for some game-time or contract.
“Hopefully we can get the green-light soon and get back on the park.”
“I am still at the Griquas until the end of October and will be linking up with the Cheetahs on the 1st of November. I am excited about that and the new challenge that will bring.”
With Groenewald’s contract at the Cheetahs starts on 1 November, it could mean that he will play for the Griquas until the end of the domestic competition. There have also been suggestions that players whose contracts expire at the end of October could possibly play for two teams during the domestic competition, should rugby games get underway.
