Cheetahs set to host Pumas in Currie Cup opener─── MORGAN PIEK 08:56 Thu, 03 Sep 2020
A list of fixtures has indicated that the Toyota Free Cheetahs will open their Currie Cup defence against the Pumas on 10 October.
The fixture is marked as a home game, however, at this stage, it remains unclear if SA Rugby will be making use of the extremely costly bio-bubble.
The same day, the Griquas are set to play away to the Bulls, while the Sharks host the Lions. The Stormers will enjoy a bye.
Meanwhile, the Cheetahs and Griquas are planning a friendly match on 26 September, and the Peacock Blues coach, Scott Mathie, told OFM Sport that he and his chargers were excited about the pending game.
“If all goes according to plan, we will hopefully have that warm-up fixture finalised on that date. It would be great to get that in.
“I know that the guys are excited to just get some game-time under the belt.
“It's been a year and a few months since we last played. It's a hell of a long time, so you can just imagine how long the preseason has been. The guys just want to play some rugby now.
“Any game against the Cheetahs is always going to be one of those derby-rivalry type matches.
“The players are just excited to get on the field again. We are looking forward to that and hopefully, it all comes to fruition.”
SA Rugby is yet to confirm the fixtures and venues for the Currie Cup.
