Smyth was named as the leading try-scorer in the competition after he crossed the whitewash on no less than 10 occasions in just 13 games played by the team during the season.

It’s the second season in a row that the honour has been bestowed upon a Cheetahs player after Rabz Maxwane scored a record-equalling 14 tries the 2018/19 campaign.

Smith told OFM Sport that team deserves the recognition for their good play.

"Rabz and I actually had a bit of a conversation about this yesterday. You don't get the top try-scorer award if the team is not playing well.

"I came to the Cheetahs at just the right time. The team was really playing well and we still had six pending home games, so we could have threatened that record. But, the win is enough for now.

"I just have to say thanks so much to my teammates. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time."

Meanwhile, the PRO14 semi-finals kick-off on Friday night with Leinster facing Munster, while Edinburgh tackle Ulster on Saturday.
