Japan's Naomi Osaka was the first to book her place in the championship match when she beat Jennifer Brady of the USA 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, the first of those three sets being decided in a tie break, to give herself a shot at a second US Open title.

Meanwhile, Serena Williams’s quest for a record-equalling 24th Grand Glam title came to an abrupt end when she lost 6-1, 3-6, 3-6 to Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the second semi-final. Azarenka will now play in her 3rd final against the 2018 winner, Naomi Osaka, on Saturday.

The first men’s semis will be played on Friday evening at 22h00 with Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain facing Alexander Zverev of Germany, then at 00h00 Daniil Medvedev of Russia will face off against Dominic Thiem of Austria in the second semi-final, with both matches being played at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
