Star loose delighted to be in training with the Cheetahs─── MORGAN PIEK 13:44 Fri, 11 Sep 2020
The star Western Province and SA Schools loose-forward, Gideon van Wyk has joined the Toyota Free State Cheetahs in their training as they build towards the Currie Cup.
Last year, Van Wyk stared for Province in the Craven Week in Bloemfontein and earned himself a bursary at the University of the Free State.
The 19-year-old told OFM Sport that it’s a dream come true to work alongside his heroes.
“I’m still 19-year-old, so if someone asked me where do you see yourself in a year? I wouldn’t say with the senior guys and training with them.
“It’s a dream come true, and I’m really blessed and humbled by this opportunity. Hopefully, I can stay there and earn my spot in the team to play with the senior guys.
“It’s quite an experience to be training with the seniors like Junior Pokomela and Jasper Wiese, but especially with Frans Steyn.
“I was only seven-years-old when he started playing for the Springboks.
"You can imagine that little boy seeing Steyn playing for the Boks, and now I am on the training field with him.
"It’s a great experience for me, and thus far he has taught me a lot of things in the defence and on the attack.”
Meanwhile, the former Junior Springbok lock, Victor Sekekete, is set to join the Cheetahs from the Griquas later in the year. Sekekete previously represented the Southern Kings and Golden Lions as well.
