The Toyota Free State Cheetahs want to measure themselves against the best South Africa has to offer, and in doing so also defend their Currie Cup title in a competition that has not been labelled as “watered down”.

This is according to the coach, Hawies Fourie.

On Wednesday, after much speculation, SA Rugby finally confirmed the start of the domestic rugby season, and it will start as soon as next week.

The season will kick off in Pretoria with a Super Hero day and the four Super Rugby teams will square off. The Bulls will be up against the Sharks, while the Lions and Stormers will go head-to-head.

The following weekend, the action will be at Newlands in Cape Town, when the Springbok Green and Gold teams face off in what will effectively be a national trials match.

The Currie Cup, will kick-off on October 10th, and while SA Rugby is yet to confirm the fixtures, it will be a seven-team double-round competition, which will be played over Christmas and New Years with the final in mid-January.

Fourie told OFM Sport that they welcome the good news and they are determined to defend their title.

“We want to win the Currie Cup again and our aim is to win it when all the teams are at full strength.

“The three previous Currie Cups that we won was in World Cup years and some of the unions said that quite a few Springboks came from their teams and weren’t at full strength.

“That’s our goal, to win it when everybody is at full strength.”

The fixtures will be released in due course, but it is believed that the Cheetahs will host the Pumas in Bloemfontein in the opening match.
