Cheetahs bring in Mchunu and Van Wyk─── MORGAN PIEK 09:25 Wed, 21 Oct 2020
The Toyota Cheetahs have contracted two new props as they build on their depth for the remainder of the Super Rugby Unlocked series and the upcoming Currie Cup.
The Cheetahs contracted the former Lions and Sunwolves front-rower, Hencus van Wyk, and Khutha Mchunu from the Sharks.
Van Wyk will be at the Cheetahs until at least the end of January 2021, while Mchunu’s contract is set to expire on 31 October 2021.
Mchunu, who attended Glenwood in Durban, enjoyed limited game time at the Sharks and he told OFM Sport that he is happy to be in Bloemfontein.
“For me, coming here to Bloemfontein is all about opportunity and just trying to get myself out onto the pitch to contribute to the Cheetahs culture and the way they play.
“The guys are playing some really good rugby at the moment, so I am just looking to contribute to the team in whatever way I can, be it on or off the field.
“I'm just looking forward to playing my part here at the Cheetahs.
“Sometimes we look too far ahead and focus on what’s to come, but for me regarding where the Cheetahs are going to play in the coming year or so, I'm not too worried about that.
“I'm just worried about making sure that I play week-in, week-out. That is the biggest thing for me now. If I can get that right, regardless of where we play, I'm happy.”
Van Wyk in his turn realises that as a front-rower he will have his work cut out for him at the franchise which boasts with a rich history of outstanding props.
“It's a great privilege and honour to be in Bloemfontein with the Cheetahs for the next couple of months.
“It is very sad for them to have been kicked out of the PRO14 the way they have. I reckon that it was premature, but because the Cheetahs haven't really shown yet what they are capable of.
“For me to fill those shoes at the Cheetahs will be a massive job and I am really looking forward to pulling the white-and-orange jersey over my head.
“I've been around South Africa, so it's a new challenge and I'm really looking forward to running out on to the park with the boys.”
Meanwhile, the fullback, Rhyno Smith, is still not 100% fit and ready for this weeks’ game between the Cheetahs and the Lions.
Saturday’s match at Ellis Park in Johannesburg kicks off at 16:30.
