The defending Currie Cup champions, the Toyota Free State Cheetahs, are upbeat ahead of their tournament opener against the Blue Bulls in Pretoria on Saturday.

The Cheetahs had a first-round bye, while the Bulls managed to beat Western Province 22-20 with 14 men on Saturday at Newlands.

The coach, Hawies Fourie, told OFM Sport that he is happy with the intensity of the team this time around.

“We are the only team that was able to beat them in the previous round.

“The preparations have gone well. The sessions have been a lot better than after the previous bye before we played against the Sharks.

“I am happy with the commitment, intensity and execution during training.

“We are looking forward to this weekend. We know it will be tough there, but we are looking forward and we will be able to gauge where we are in comparison to the SuperRugby teams.”

Saturday’s clash between the Bulls and Cheetahs at Loftus Versfeld kicks off at 16:30.
