Erasmus hints at European rugby for the Cheeaths─── MORGAN PIEK 13:22 Wed, 20 Jan 2021
The South African Rugby Director of Rugby, Rassie Erasmus, has confirmed that they are working behind the scene tirelessly to ensure the future of the Toyota Cheetahs.
There has been much uncertainty about the Cheetahs future following their axing from the now expanded PRO16 in order to make way for the Bulls, Lions, Sharks and Stormers.
Speaking to the media on all matters related to the sport in South Africa, Rassie Erasmus, indicated that they are trying to secure a home for the Cheetahs in the European Challenge Cup.
Erasmus said that along with Harold Verster, Ryno Opperman and Hawies Fourie they are exploring some exciting opportunities which will start with the European Intercontinental Shield, and this is a qualifier for the Challenge Cup.
“We're trying to get them into the European Intercontinental Shield.
“There's not much other detail because they're still in negotiations and determining what's possible.
“The tournament nowadays acts as a qualifier for the distinctly more prestigious European Challenge Cup.
“If there's a breakthrough, the Cheetahs would like to announce it on their own time along with all the other factors that are relevant.
“There are really nice possibilities. They can actually get into the Challenge Cup, it's a tough competition. Those are the teams that don't quite make the top four or six of their leagues but they're still very strong.
“That's the competition that Jake White won at Montpellier, it's just under the Champions Cup.
“We're in constant talks and trying to find them proper fixtures this year.”
The Cheetahs' inclusion in the European Intercontinental Shield can be ratified as early as next month.
