The 34-year-old has been on a rugby hiatus for the best part of two years and is linked with a return to the sport but in the colours of the Cheetahs.

The player who spent a large part of his career at the Bulls and Sharks can also slot in at lock if the need arises.

The Cheetahs coach, Hawies Fourie, told OFM Sport that Potgieter needs to pass his tests in order to earn a short-term contract.

“Jacques still has to complete and fitness and medical test. He hasn't played for about 18 months. I can't take chances on any of these players.

“If he passes both of these tests then we will over him a contract until the end of October.

“We need big ball carriers in our pack and that is what he did when he last played.

“Hopefully he will pass those tests and we will still have that same quality.”

Potgieter previously also played for the Kings, Waratahs, Munakata Sanix Blues in Japan and Toulon in France. In the past, he was also linked with a move to Saracens in England.

Meanwhile, the locks, Rynier Bernardo and Jean Droste will slot with the Cheetahs next week Wednesday as they get their Franchise Cup season underway.
