The Tafel Lager Griquas have contracted well by landing the signature of the highly experienced for Junior Springbok scrumhalf, Stefan Ungerer.

Ungerer, who is only 27-years-old has been a journeyman for the better part of his career and has previously also represented the Sharks, Southern Kings and Pumas.

The Maritzburg College product will also bring some much needed PRO14 experience to the Peacocks Blues and the battle for the number nine jersey with Zak Burger will be a fierce one.

Ungerer told OFM Sport that he is delighted to be at a team again after being in the rugby wilderness for a year.

“I'm just unbelievably happy and grateful to be back in a team set-up.

“Grateful to the Griquas for offering me something and back me after a year of no rugby after what happened in the Eastern Cape and Port Elizabeth with the Southern Kings.

“I’m just very happy to be back in a team environment and the guys have been unbelievably welcoming.

“Getting to know the chaps and working with Scott (Mathie) and Albert (van den Berg) is great. They are both great coaches.

“All is good in Kimberley and I look forward to the journey ahead. I’m just hoping to learn as much as possible and add value where I can.”

The Griquas coach, Scott Mathie, who was a scrumhalf in his playing days told OFM Sport that they are delighted to have Ungerer on board, and he is happy with his depth in the number nine jersey.

“As far as Stefan Ungerer it is good to have him on board this us. We are extremely pleased and excited to have him.

“He brings a wealth of experience. He has played PRO14 for many years and he has been around.

“He is a leader and is an excellent scrumhalf. His passing game, his basics and his kicking game are also in his skill set and what he is good at.

“Zak Burger is still with us, so we really have some great depth in the scrumhalf position now, and that coupled with Reagan Oranje who we go from Tuks.

“Now we've got three very accomplished scrumhalves now. It's a key position and I think those guys will really push each other and we will get the best out of all of them.

“I'm excited to see what we can do with that position and how it's going to help us going forward.”

The Griquas have also contracted the Bloemfontein-born former Lions loose forward, Pikkie de Villiers.
