Nomination bittersweet for Steyn | News Article
Frans Steyn - Gallo

The two-time World Cup-winning Springbok, Frans Steyn, has been nominated for the prestigious South African Rugby Player of the Year award for 2020.

Steyn, who joined the Toyota Cheetahs in July last year, made a big impact at the franchise and proved to be very influential.

Apart from being named alongside the former Cheetahs, Duane Vermeulen and Cornal Hendricks, as well as Steven Kitshoff and Curwin Bosch for the big prize, Steyn also made the short-list for the SuperRugby Unlocked Player of the Year.

Vermeulen and Marco van Staden were also nominated in the category.

Steyn told OFM Sport that his nomination is somewhat bittersweet.

“It is a big honour and it's a big deal, but the last couple of games in the Currie Cup didn't go according to plan.

“It would have been nice to have been able to do better in the Currie Cup as a team.

“For me, it's more about earning the respect of the players that you play with, and that of the Free State union.

“It is a big honour to be nominated, but it is bittersweet.

“I would have liked for us to have gotten better results in the Currie Cup and to have won it as well, but that didn't happen.”

The winners will be announced on Thursday.
