Snyman in serious doubt for B&I Lions series─── MORGAN PIEK 09:16 Mon, 05 Jul 2021
The Springbok camp will be hoping for some good news in the coming days regarding the lock, RG Snyman.
The Munster second-rower is in serious doubt for the upcoming three-Test series against the British & Irish Lions following the now infamous firepit incident in Limerick a few weeks ago.
Due to the extensive burns the 2,06m tall bruiser needs to have skin-grafts and undergo rehabilitation.
The Bok forwards coach, Deon Davids, said that they are not overly confident that Snyman will be available for the series against the best of the home nations.
“RG Snyman is not in the camp at the point in time.
“He has gone for surgery in order to get skin-grafts done and of course he will have to undergo rehabilitation as well.
“We will wait for the medical reports for more clarity on his progress, but at this stage there is a a small chance that he will indeed be a part of the squad for the series against the British & Irish Lions.
“But he will definitely return to the group for the remainder of the year's Test matches that lie ahead in the Rugby Championship and the end of the year tour,
Meanwhile, the Springboks are sweating over the fitness of the lock, Eben Etzebeth, who sustained a rib injury during Friday’s 40-9 win over Georgia in the first Test at Loftus Versfeld.
Davids added that they are optimistic and they are expecting a fully fit squad for Friday’s second Test against the Georgians.
“As the head coach (Jacques Nienaber) said, they have a plan to selected the best possible players.
“Obviously there are a few players with bumps and bruises, but they have been assed medically and at this stage I hope we will have a full contingent to select from.
“Within in the next day or two we will have a clear picture of who will take to the field on Friday.”
Friday’s evenings 2nd Test against Georgia at Ellis Park kicks off at 19:00.
