#BreakingNews - Lions vs. Cheetahs cancelled─── MORGAN PIEK 14:11 Thu, 15 Jul 2021
The Currie Cup between the Lions and the Toyota Cheetahs in Bloemfontein has been called off.
This comes as the Cheetahs requested for the match in Johannesburg to be called off because they don’t feel that it is safe to travel at this point in time due to various reasons.
The CEO of the Lions, Rudolf Straeuli, told OFM Sport that the game is off. He also indicated that they were willing to travel to Bloemfontein in order to play the game.
“We are obviously in difficult times and these are not decisions that have been made lightly.
“We want to play and fulfil our obligations. We were willing to travel to Bloemfontein to play the fixture there.
“The problem is that at moment is that there is uncertainty with some teams and areas, but we are quite safe at Emirate Airlines Park.
“We're quite fortunate to have a partner like Fidelity on board. I can say that all of our players and coaching staff have been at work.
“It is difficult times and I would say that SA Rugby has got to make a decision on that. It's unfortunately not for us as the participants to make a decision on that.”
The latest news means that no Currie Cup fixtures will be fulfilled this week after SA Rugby announced yesterday that the planned match between the Griquas and Bulls as well as the game between the Sharks and Pumas are off.
At this stage it is unclear if each team will receive four points or if only the Lions will get points.
An official announcement from SA Rugby is expected on Thursday afternoon.
