Boks expect near full strength squad for 1st Test─── MORGAN PIEK 14:56 Mon, 19 Jul 2021
The Springboks will have a near fully fit squad to select from for the 1st Test against the British & Irish Lions on Saturday in Cape Town.
The last group of players will be linking up with the remainder of squad follow their Covid-19 isolation in Johannesburg.
The Boks have been boosted with the flyhalf, Handré Pollard, cleared and fully fit for the 1st Test.
Pollard, who is expected to start on Saturday says they were able to train in isolation.
“It is very strict once you go into the Covid wing in a hotel.
“For the first five or six days you just got to sit in your room just to give your body time to fight whatever there is to fight; if there is something to fight.
“Then they provided us with the necessary gym equipment in rooms. Watt bikes or whatever you wanted.
“Once you start you have everything available to make sure that you start on top of things physically.
“It's about balancing it out and not losing what you already have.”
The assistant coach, Mzwandile Stick, in his turn indicated that Pollard could lead the team if Kolisi is unavailable.
Stick added that they will have more clarity this evening once the remaining players in doubt have consulted with a specialist.
“They going to the specialist today (Monday) and by tonight we will probably know who is fit to play.
“By Wednesday, whatever we announce, will be the squad that is going to play.
“We trust the process and we wouldn’t do anything stupid by not sticking to the plans.”
Jacques Nienaber will name his team on Wednesday and Saturday’s Test at the Cape Town Stadium will kick-off at 18:00.
