Griquas target back-to-back wins─── MORGAN PIEK 09:01 Tue, 20 Jul 2021
The Tafel Lager Griquas will be targeting back-to-back wins on the road in the Currie Cup when they face the Lions on Wednesday afternoon in Johannesburg.
With the Pumas not playing this week due to a bye, the Griquas can go to the top of the standings, provided they beat the Lions and the Toyota Cheetahs beat Western Province in Bloemfontein.
The Griquas were scheduled to face the Bulls in Kimberley last week, however, this match was called off in order for the team from Pretoria to go and tackle South Africa A in Cape Town.
The rest close to halfway through the competition was a bit of blessing in disguise for the Griquas and afforded some of the injured players to recover and bolster the squad's depth.
The Peacock Blues coach, Scott Mathie, told OFM Sport that they have taken a lot of confidence from the win over Province in Cape Town.
“We're looking to take on the Lions in what will be a difficult game against a strong team at home. The have a very strong setpiece as well.
“With the victory away to Western Province we do know that we have the ability to compete and beat any team in the competition and I think we will just take a lot of confidence from the games that we've played already.”
Wednesday afternoon’s game at Ellis Park kicks off at 14:30.
