Morné has been there before - Nienaber

Morné has been there before - Nienaber | News Article
Morné Steyn - Gallo

The Springbok flyhalf, Morné Steyn, is set to achieve the rare distinction of playing in a British & Irish Lions series for the second time in his career when he takes to the field on Saturday in Cape Town.

Steyn has been named on the bench for the 3rd and decisive Test.

In 2009, Steyn made his Springbok debut against the British & Irish Lions in the 1st Test, and a week later he famously converted a last minute 53-metre-long penalty to win the series for the Boks.

Bok coach, Jacques Nienaber, feels that Steyn is no stranger to big games.

“One of the big things that went in Morne's favour is the fact that he has been in big games like this, he understands the pressure.  If you take the World Cup final and if you take this game, the pressure is going to be similar. It's do or die. Morné has been there before and he has done it before in a big game in 2009.

“It was a toss-up between Morné and Elton (Jantjies). Morné played for us in the South Africa A game and I thought he controlled the game quite well. Elton did excellently for us in the first Test when he came on when Handré (Pollard) started cramping at the backend of that Test.

“In our discussion when we went through this selection process. It is a long season and we are going straight into the Rugby Championship against Argentina next week, then we go to Australasia and the end-of-year tour. It is pretty much keeping everybody up to date, giving them game time and trying to spread the load.

“I'm not saying that Elton wouldn't have the big-match temperament. I've seen him do that before in big games as well. We have to make sure that everybody stays sharp and match-fit. Elton has done nothing wrong.”

Saturday’s 3rd and final Test at the Cape Town Stadium kicks off at 18:00.
