The Springbok team for their Rugby Championship opener against Argentina on Saturday in Gqeberha will be named on Tuesday afternoon.

The Springboks will be played in the Championship for the first time since they won the title in 2019. Last year they did not compete due to the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The Boks will more than likely be making use of more of the players that didn’t feature in the 2-1 series win over the British & Irish Lions.

The Bok assistant coach, Deon Davids, says a whole lot of factors will go into the team selection.

“We come from a very competitive series and we have a lot of guys that performed well when they got an opportunity.

“The players’ performances, the player workload, injuries, and teams we play against, all those factors play a role in our consideration for team selection.

“Those are things we’ve looked at from the start of the season. We’ve understood and looked at different scenarios during the Lions series and how things will unfold in the Rugby Championship and, later, the end-of-year tour.

“As for this week, we will consider player rotation or continuing with players based on their performances or building more depth in the squad.

“Those are all the things we will consider in making the final decision for the team this coming weekend.”

It is understood that Elton Jantjies could start at flyhalf for the 1st Test against the Pumas, while players such as Frans Steyn and Joseph Dweba could be in action.

The team announcement will be at 13:30 and Saturday’s Test at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium kicks off at 17:05.
