The Ixias, who are now under the guidance of the former Springbok flyhalf, Braam van Straaten, will tackle the University of Johannesburg in their first game.

The Ixias also welcome fans back to CUT Park.

Van Straaten told OFM Sport that by the time the tournament kicks off, they hope for more fans.

“We are playing against UJ in Bloemfontein and we are looking forward to the challenge. They have just recruited Jonathan Mokuena. He is not just a good guy, but he is a good coach as well.

“He has been in the Varsity Cup for quite some time and he is experienced as a coach as well.

“It's a nice starter and we have one or two good games, there we hit our straps with some tough ones.

“The Varsity Cup won't be the same if there are not some crowds, so we are looking forward to seeing the fans out.

“Hopefully there will be not only 2000 but a little bit more fans to pull the boys through and give them something to go for.”

Round one of the Varsity Cup will kick off on 14 February.
