Steyn set for unique record─── MORGAN PIEK 14:38 Mon, 08 Nov 2021
The Toyota Cheetahs centre, Frans Steyn, is set to become the longest serving Springbok later this week.
On Thursday, Steyn, who was the man of the match on Saturday during the Springboks 23-18 win over Wales in Cardiff, will celebrate the 15th anniversary of making his Test debut against Ireland in 2006.
Steyn made his Springbok debut on the left-wing on 11 November in Dublin when Ireland beat South Africa 32-15. Steyn also scored his first Springbok try in that Test.
It will remain to be seen if the 34-year-old Steyn will earn a starting role this week against Scotland in Edinburgh.
The former lock, Victor Matfield, who is the Springboks most capped player of all-time with 127 appearances in the green-and-gold, played for the national team for 14 years.
The only other Springbok to win the World Cup on two occasions, apart from Steyn, Os du Randt, represented South Africa at the highest level for 13 years, while eight players had an international career spanning 12 years.
The two-time World Cup winner, Steyn, says he has no regrets over his career as a Springbok.
“I think I have realised that when I come on, it could be the last time in the green and gold.
“That’s just it. I just want to enjoy it and make full use of that opportunity.
“I don’t have any regrets, but there were a lot of screw-ups in my younger days but rugby is a weird sport.
“Next week it can go another way, I could have a shocker. That’s the way rugby works.
“You can’t always be on a high, but as I said, this could be the last game I play for the Springboks, you never know.
“There is a lot of talent coming through, so I am just enjoying my time.”
The team to face Scotland will be named tomorrow and Saturday’s Test at Murrayfield kicks off at 15:00.
