Ixias vs UJ declared a draw─── MORGAN PIEK 15:25 Wed, 16 Feb 2022
The Varsity Cup match between the Central University of Technology Ixias and the University of Johannesburg in Bloemfontein has been declared a draw.
On Monday night, the visitors from Johannesburg were declared 44-42 winners, but the Ixias appealed the outcome on the basis that the try by the loose-forward, Ulrich Stander, shortly before half-time was incorrectly not awarded as a point of origin try.
SA Rugby reviewed the available footage and declared that the try had indeed started in the Ixias half of the field, and that the home side would be awarded the two extra points to make the outcome of the game a 44-44 draw.
The correction of the result was confirmed by the Varsity Cup.
The result in the Varsity Cup Round 1 fixture between CUT and UJ, played at the CUT Rugby Stadium, has been corrected following an appeal of a try scored by CUT.
The try was awarded as a normal five-point try and they believed it should have been a Point of Origin (seven-point) try. SA Rugby reviewed the match and the try which led to the decision that the try needs to be changed to reflect a Point of Origin try.
With this correction, the result between CUT and UJ is a 44-all draw. It was previously reported as CUT 42-44 UJ. The logs and match results have been updated accordingly.
This now means that the Ixias are 5th in the standings on three points, with UJ in 6th.
The Ixias tackle Wits on Monday evening in Johannesburg in round 2.
