He can be proud of his first game for the Cheetahs - Fourie | News Article

The Toyota Cheetahs will have selection headaches this week leading into their important Currie Cup game against the Bulls.

It’s especially in the flyhalf department where the team while have to have a good think about who will wear the number ten jersey on Saturday.

The Cheetahs are a bit thin in the flyhalf department after Reinhardt Fortuin injured his quad on Thursday and this forced George Lourens to run-on for an unexpected debut against the Pumas.

Fortuin was running at training on Monday morning, but he didn’t part take is the actual team training session.

The backline marshal, Siya Masuku, missed out last week due to illness and he wasn’t at training this morning.

During the 29-28 defeat to the Pumas, the captain Ruan Pienaar switched flyhalf during the second half and this saw Rewan Kruger taking over at halfback for the remainder of the game.

This could be the Cheetahs thinking against the Bulls as well, but only time will tell.

The Cheetahs Hawies Fourie told OFM Sport that he was happy with Lourens’ debut.

“George did well and he didn't train in the run-on side. We had a walkthrough before the pre-match mean on Friday.

“I think that he can be proud of his first game for the Cheetahs and it was defiantly not his fault that we lost the game.

“But, guys like Chris Smit and Robert Ebersohn played well, so we can manage it without Frans Steyn for the next week. Hopefully he will be ready for the semi-final.”

Meanwhile, the hard-working flanker, Gideon van der Merwe, trained with the team on Monday morning.

There were fears that he might be out with concussion having to leave the field after taking a hit to the face. Whether or not he is fit to play against the Bulls remains to be seen.

Saturday’s game at the Toyota Stadium kicks off at 14:30.
