The centre, Sango Xamlashe, could take charge of the Griquas for Saturday’s big Currie Cup final in Kimberley.

The former Tuks Varsity Cup winning captain could be called upon to take the leadership role for the match as there is some doubt over the availability of Niel Otto.

The flanker still needs to be cleared of concussion after taking a blow to the head during their semi-final against the Bulls.

The Griquas assistant coach, Barend Pieterse, said Xamlashe may well lead the team.

“That is the way we went at that time when Niel went off in Pretoria.

“Sango did well leading Tukkies in the Varsity Cup last year. He has been doing it in training and he has been doing when Niel couldn't play.

“There is a strong possibility that if that happens, he can take over the captaincy for the final.”

Saturday’s Currie Cup final between the Griquas and Pumas in Kimberley kicks off at 15:00.
