The Griffons are the Currie Cup First Division champions for 2022 after beating the Eastern Province Elephants 45-16 in Welkom.

The team from the Northern Free State finished off their campaign unbeaten after going through the round-robin stage without losing a single game.

The Griffons scored five tries to the two of the team from Gqeberha for their first Currie Cup title in three attempts. In 2019, the Griffons lost to the Jaguares XV of Argentina in the final, while last year they were edged by the Leopards in Potchefstroom.

The win at the HT Pelatona Stadium on Friday has handed the Griffons their fifth First Division title.

It is exciting times for the Griffons as they will be playing in the Currie Cup Premier Division next season.

On Saturday, the Griquas will host the Pumas in Kimberley in the final of the Currie Cup Premier Division.
