We didn't execute our plan - Bergh | News Article

The Griquas coach, Pieter Bergh, believes that his team had stage fright on Saturday during the historic Currie Cup final against the Pumas in Kimberley.

The day belonged to the Pumas who beat the Griquas 26-19 for their first-ever Currie Cup title.

The Pumas dominated the game from the first whistle and they were better in most aspects of the game and they more certainly made better use of their opportunities.

The Griquas did look rattled on the park and it was also clear to see that what worked for them earlier in the competition wasn’t working on the day.

Following the final, a disappointed Bergh said that the moment was perhaps too big for his young side and they failed to execute their game plan that had been put in place.

“I thought that we were never in the game,” said Bergh.

“They dominated us from the beginning, partly because we put ourselves in that position.

“To be honest, I thought we had stage fright - we have to be honest about that.

“We didn’t pitch up. There were too many mistakes and there were too many errors putting us on the backfoot.

“The plan was not to give them lineouts by kicking out. The plan was to kick contestable kicks. We didn't kick one contestable kick the whole game, so we didn't execute our plan.”

Several of the Griquas players will bid farewell to the union with players such as Munier Hartzenberg and Siba Qoma heading to the Cheetahs, while Stefan Ungerer will be heading to the Stormers in Cape Town.
