Wales focus on improved discipline─── MORGAN PIEK 08:07 Tue, 05 Jul 2022
Wales will be targeting an improved performance in the scrum when they come up against the Springboks in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
Last week the young Welsh front-row stood their ground against the Springboks for the most part, but the home side once again proved why they are considered to be the best scrummaging unit in world rugby.
The Dragons did exceptionally well in the defense of the lineout maul and they certainly denied South Africa points.
The Welsh scrum coach, Jonathan Humphreys, said they have to make a step-up from their performance during their 32-29 defeat at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.
“There wasn't a lot of scrums on the weekend. But there are improvements for us to do and we know that.
“Considering where we were the last time we played them, it's definitely an improvement.
“But this Saturday we need to be better than we were last Saturday.”
The Welsh conceded four yellow cards in Pretoria and Humphreys added that their discipline let them down and they will have to improve on this aspect of their game.
“Discipline is a huge part of a game and it's no secret that it was part of our undoing.
“You're coming into a country that loves its rugby and up against a team that's respected for coming at you, so you can't take a step back.
“It's not about being illegal, it's about facing the challenge. We did that and we're certainly not going to roll over. We have to be on the front foot and that won't change.”
Saturday’s Test will be the fourth between these two nations in Bloemfontein.
