The Springboks coach, Jacques Nienaber, has downplayed the idea that his team for Saturday’s Test against Wales in Bloemfontein are second stringers.

Nienaber made 14 changes to the starting XV that beat Wales 32-29 last week Saturday at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

The team will also feature six debutants of which two of them in the form of Kurt-Lee Arendse and Evan Roos will start. Ntuthuko Mchunu, Ruan Nortjé, Deon Fourie and Grant Williams will make their respective debuts off the bench.

Nienaber said that he has faith in the team that he has selected and he believes that they have what it takes to win the series in Bloemfontein.

“I’m not going to take offence if you say this is a ‘B’ team,” said Nienaber.

Eben Etzebeth will take offence, so will Handré Pollard – and Jesse Kriel as well as Thomas du Toit and so will all the other guys in the team because this is a match-23 picked to beat Wales.

“Our biggest strategic objective as Springboks is to win, and we picked a side to do that.

“You might ask, why not wrap up the series with the same team from the first Test and then make all the changes for the dead rubber third Test. We want to see what these guys can do under pressure because in a series against the All Blacks and in the World Cup you play under constant pressure. In a dead-rubber it doesn’t matter that much if you win or lose.

“For our guys who will play on Saturday, it will be like a final to them.”

Saturday’s Test at the Toyota Stadium kicks off at 17:05.

Springboks - 15 Warrick Gelant, 14 Kurt-Lee Arendse, 13 Jesse Kriel, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 Aphelele Fassi, 10 Handré Pollard (captain), 9 Jaden Hendrikse, 8 Evan Roos, 7 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 6 Marcell Coetzee, 5 Marvin Orie, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Trevor Nyakane, 2 Joseph Dweba, 1 Thomas du Toit.
