The Welsh captain, Dan Biggar, has lauded the character of the replacement flyhalf, Gareth Anscombe, following their historic win over the Springboks in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

Anscombe who replaced Biggar earlier in the Test slotted a last-minute conversion from the touchline to hand the visitors a 13-12 win over the Springboks.

The British & Irish Lions winger, Josh Adams, silenced the 46 000 strong crowd in Bloemfontein by scoring a try in the left corner in the 78th minute to set up an opportunity to win the Test with a conversion.

While South Africa were determined to try and salvage a win in the dying seconds of the Tests, the match was brought to an end when the Springboks replacement tighthead prop, Vincent Koch, knocked on the ball.

The victory also marked their first-ever win over the Springboks in South Africa.

Biggar said that the New Zealand-born Anscombe stepped up when the occasions demanded it.

“It was just absolute character,” said Biggar who left the field in the second half with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.

“I thought that he was excellent from the minute that he came on. It's just one of those kicks that from the moment the ball left his boot it looked good.

“It was a huge effort from him and it made a huge difference.

“I'm really pleased for him because he has obviously had a difficult couple of years by being out with injuries.

“It was a massive effort and I am really proud of him.”

Saturday’s big series decider at the Cape Town Stadium kicks off at 17:05.
