Teammates praise Etzebeth ahead of 100th Test─── MORGAN PIEK 08:28 Thu, 14 Jul 2022
The Springboks centre, Damian de Allende, is excited for the lock, Eben Etzebeth, who will be playing in his 100th Test on the weekend.
The Boks will host Wales in Cape Town in the third and decisive Test and this will also see Eben Etzebeth become South Africa’s seventh centurion.
Apart from becoming the youngest Springbok to reach the milestone he will become the second lock to achieve the feat with the other being Victor Matfield.
De Allende said they hope they can pull this one through for Etzebeth.
“He's been exceptional for South Africa. He works very hard and his hard work has paid off,” said De Allende.
“Hopefully on Saturday we pull things together on the field and we can celebrate with him afterwards.”
Lood de Jager, who will start at lock alongside Etzebeth, said that it will be special to back down in the scrum next to the big enforcer.
“It's very special to start his 100th Test with him,” said the former Cheetah.
“It's unbelievable what those guys have achieved. It's a massive honour putting on that jersey even once, so to do it 100 times like Eben and 50 times like Bongi just shows consistency and how hard they've worked.
“For us, there is a bigger picture. We as a team need to win a game on Saturday to make it special for those guys. We're just focusing on putting on a good performance.”
Etzebeth has also captained the Springboks when he was named as the skipper for the 2017 Rugby Championship with Warren Whiteley unavailable due to injury.
Saturday’s third decisive Test at the Cape Town Stadium kicks off at 17:05.
