The Springbok loosehead prop, Steven Kitshoff, has backed Joseph Dweba at hooker for this weekend’s Rugby Championship Test against the All Blacks in Johannesburg.

Dweba was named in the number two jersey as a late change and will be playing against the All Blacks for the first time in his career.

This week it will be the strong ball-carrier's third Test, with his only other start coming against Wales in Bloemfontein last month.

Kitshoff will, however, once again play off of the bench, while Dweba’s school friend, Ox Nché, will start at loosehead prop.

The World Cup winner, Kitshoff, said Dweba has what it takes to start against the All Blacks.

“He has been involved with us for quite a while so this is a good reward for him, as he has been training really hard over a long period of time.

“He knows the structures inside and out, so it won’t be a problem for him. At the same time, I am sad for Bongi, who has been playing well. I hope that he gets over his injury quickly.”

Kitshoff added that the All Blacks are also a formidable opponent when it comes to the scrum contest and this week will be no different.

“When it comes to scrum time, the All Blacks have always been a good international outfit. From back when Owen Franks and those guys set the standards for international scrumming, I have always had respect for them and it was them that I looked up to when I was young.

“They will always be a tough opponent - as they were last weekend. We had to do a lot of hard work last week, particularly in the second half.

“But we have spent a lot of time working on our scrumming this week and we are confident we will be up to the challenge on Saturday.”

Saturday’s Test between the Springboks and All Blacks at Ellis Park kicks off at 17:05.
