Springboks sweating over the fitness of Willemse─── MORGAN PIEK 07:56 Mon, 19 Sep 2022
The Springboks are sweating over the fitness of Damian Willemse ahead of this week’s second Rugby Championship Test against Argentina in Durban.
On Saturday, Willemse was forced to leave the field with a suspected concussion during their 36-20 win over the Pumas in Buenos Aires.
The Springboks are already without the services of Handré Pollard for the rest of the year due to a knee injury, while Elton Jantjies was released from the camp while the team was in Argentina. This was in order to afford him time to deal with the whole affair saga.
Should Willemse not be fit for the Test, the Springboks will be forced to either play Frans Steyn at flyhalf or bring in a replacement backline marshal.
The Springbok coach, Jacques Nienaber, hasn’t ruled out the possibility of bringing in reinforcements.
“We will have to let the players in South Africa know who we will bring back into the squad.
“That will only happen after we do some assessments from an injury point of view. Then we will make a decision in terms of that.
“We will most probably make an announcement on the squad on Monday. We only arrive back in South Africa in the early hours of Monday morning.”
Saturday’s Test between the Springboks and Pumas at Kings’ Park kicks off at 17:05.
